Yoane Wissa looks set to miss Newcastle United’s Champions League opener against Barcelona on Thursday, journalist Craig Hope has revealed.
The 28-year-old forward was absent from the Magpies’ 1-0 win over Wolves on Saturday and will seemingly have to wait longer for his debut after sustaining an ankle injury on international duty with DR Congo.
Newcastle were also without Jacob Ramsey for their first Premier League win of the season, with the attacking midfielder dealing with a foot injury he suffered during the 0-0 draw at Leeds before the international break.
Barcelona could be without star forward Lamine Yamal on Thursday night, as the 18-year-old is dealing with a groin injury and is expected to miss Sunday’s league game against Valencia.

According to Hope, Wissa could be sidelined for several weeks following his ankle injury on international duty and looks set to miss Barcelona’s visit to St James’ Park on Thursday:
Wissa joined Newcastle in a deal worth around £55m on transfer deadline day, following Alexander Isak’s departure to Liverpool for a British transfer record fee of £125m.
The 'extraordinary' DR Congo international enjoyed a career-best Premier League campaign at Brentford in 2024/25, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 35 appearances.
Wissa has yet to play a single minute of club football this season, having refused to feature for Brentford ahead of his long-awaited move to St James’ Park.
Newcastle spent £250m on new signings this summer, including a club-record £69m on Nick Woltemade, who scored on his debut against Wolves on Saturday.
Newcastle are set to return to the Champions League for the second time in three seasons and will meet Barcelona in the competition for the first time since the 2002/03 campaign.
The Magpies have met Barcelona four times in competitive matches, winning just once – a 3-2 victory in 1997 thanks to Faustino Asprilla’s hat-trick.
