Newcastle United have learned the severity of Yoane Wissa's knee problem and it has been reported that he has not sustained an ACL injury. Chronicle Live understands that Wissa's injury is not as serious as initially thought, with the striker expected to return to action in four to five weeks following assessment. Wissa was unable to make his debut against Wolves after sustaining an injury while on duty with DR Congo in the World Cup qualifier against Senegal last week.
He will be absent for a number of games this month while he steps up his recovery efforts. However, there is optimism that Wissa will be back in October to make his Toon debut. The winger attempted to continue playing but was eventually forced off before Newcastle staff realised he would not be fit to play against Wolves.
After the match, Eddie Howe stated: "I've got no news [on Wissa]. I'm waiting to find out myself."
Howe has now been informed that Wissa's knee issue is not the worst-case scenario, which many feared after seeing video footage of the DR Congo star collapsing on the pitch.
He could miss the next six matches against Barcelona, AFC Bournemouth, Bradford City, Arsenal, Union SG and Nottingham Forest. However, there is hope that Wissa could be involved when Newcastle go up against Brighton in mid-October.
He will be hoping to hit the ground running at St James' Park as he looks to carry over the prolific form he showed at Brentford.
After his summer move to Newcastle was confirmed, Wissa said: "I'm really happy to be here and to sign for one of the biggest clubs in the Premier League.
"I'm very, very excited to put on the black and white shirt. I've got dreams, I've got faith and now I will do my best to make it all happen. I can't wait to get started."
Howe added: "Yoane is a player who we have admired for some time and we're delighted to have him on board.
"He brings proven Premier League quality, demonstrated not only by his goalscoring output but also the crucial work he does for the team.
"Yoane's style of play will excite our supporters and complement our style of play - he has pace, power and an excellent work rate. He immediately makes us stronger."
