Luke Edwards shares why Newcastle United medical staff won't rush Yoane Wissa back into action

Newcastle United’s medical department are unlikely to rush Yoane Wissa back into action.

Wissa has suffered a knee injury and may not make his long-awaited Newcastle United debut until October at the earliest.

That is hugely disappointing for all involved. The forward was desperate to join the club for what felt like the entire summer but was not afforded a move until the very closing stages of the transfer window.

Now, he faces a reasonably lengthy lay-off after sustaining a knee injury while playing for DR Congo earlier this month. Wissa chased onto a loose ball before falling over onto his knee and collapsing in a heap.

His absence for at least the next six games puts a lot of pressure on Nick Woltemade. Luckily, Newcastle’s club-record signing scored the winner on his debut against Wolves on Saturday.

The German alone cannot be expected to lead the line, however. It’s important to get Wissa up to speed as quickly as possible, although those behind the scenes will not be rushing.

Newcastle United won’t rush Yoane Wissa back into action

According to Luke Edwards of The Daily Telegraph on social media platform X, the medical staff are likely to be cautious.

Edwards suggested that six weeks is roughly the period that Wissa is set to miss.

Though it could end up being a little longer or a little less, medical staff are unlikely to rush him back into action due to his lack of pre-season.

Wissa was not involved during Brentford’s pre-season as he looked to force a move away from the club.

William Osula must step up after Yoane Wissa injury

William Osula almost left Newcastle during the summer transfer window but was eventually kept on as cover.

Now, he’s really going to need to step up.

With Wissa unavailable and Anthony Gordon suspended for the trip to Bournemouth next week, Osula is Woltemade’s main back-up in the short-term.

Clearly, that’s not ideal for Eddie Howe. Still, the Newcastle United manager can do little about it at this stage.
