Frank Lampard is a “clear and strong” candidate to replace Graham Potter if West Ham decide to pull the plug on his nine month tenure at the club.
That’s according to The Sun’s Alan Nixon, who claims that the Hammers are drawing up a short list of potential replacements for under pressure Potter who has overseen three defeats out of his opening four Premier League games of the new season – the latest a 3-0 home defeat to capital rivals Tottenham.
The good news for Coventry City fans, however, is that the report also states that proven Premier League coach Nuno Espirito Santo is also on that list if Potter “fails to deliver”.
The former Nottingham Forest coach is, according to transfer specialist Nixon, “admired” by owner David Sullivan who has “fancied him before” and may go for him again.
Ironically, Nuno lost his job at the City Ground after a fall out with the club’s hierarchy, culminating in his losing his job after the Hammers beat Forest 3-0 in a game when Potter’s future was considered to be on the line.
His availability now “puts him in West Ham’s thoughts,” claims the report which also states that Sky Blues’ boss Lampard is a “clear and strong” candidate for the post after impressing with Coventry on the back of his previous experience.
Lampard, of course, has a strong affinity with West Ham where he started his career where his dad, Frank Lampard senior, also played, earning legendary status. Lampard jnr, however, fell out of favour with some of the Hammers’ fanbase after leaving for Chelsea where he went on to have a glittering playing career.
The article concludes that Potter needs to keep winning as West Ham assess whether to back him in the next transfer window.
It also says that there are “snags” regarding the interest in Nuno, namely his “personal demands to have a say on signings and the size of his backroom staff”.
