Chelsea have the chance to bolster their ranks when the January transfer window opens for business
Chelsea drew 2-2 away at Brentford this weekend in the Premier League. Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo got their goals against the Bees. Fabio Carvalho struck late for their opponents as the Blues had to settle for a point.
Enzo Maresca’s side are unbeaten in their first four league fixtures this season. They have won and lost two so far. The London outfit are back in action on Wednesday with a Champions League clash against Bayern Munich.
Chelsea eye Marc Guehi and Mike Maignan
According to TBR Football, Chelsea want defender Marc Guehi and AC Milan goalkeeper Mike Maignan. They are keen on landing the pair ahead of the January transfer window. Both players see their contract expire at the end of the campaign.
Guehi, 25, is a key target for Liverpool but stayed put at Crystal Palace beyond the deadline of the summer window. He is due to become a free agent in June 2026 though and the Eagles face a real battle to keep hold of him. The centre-back helped Oliver Glasner’s side win the FA Cup earlier this year.
He rose up through the academy ranks at Chelsea and went on to play two games for them as a youngster. The England international was loaned out twice to Swansea City in the Championship to get some experience under his belt. He was then sold to Selhurst Park in 2021 but hasn’t looked back since.
Chelsea plot double deal
Chelsea could see Maignan as someone to boost their goalkeeping department. If they signed him, he would give them more competition and depth between the sticks. He is facing an uncertain future at the San Siro and most signs point towards him leaving for a fresh start somewhere else.
Prior to Liverpool’s European clash against AC Milan in 2024, their stopper Alisson was full of praise for Maignan and said: “We are coming up against a great goalkeeper. He has been at the best level for five years now. He has been good since he arrived at AC Milan; he is good for the France national team. He has perfectly replaced a great goalkeeper, a world champion in Hugo Lloris. It isn’t easy but he has done very well.”
“He is physical, quick, he has clean technique. He is very strong. He is one of the best in the world. The quality of goalkeepers has really increased – Mike Maignan is within this elite.”
The France international, who has 34 caps to his name, progressed up the PSG system and was a regular for them at various different youth levels. Despite featuring heavily for their B team, he didn’t quite make the grade with their first-team. He was sold to Lille and became their first choice in Ligue 1.
AC Milan came calling in 2021 and he has since enjoyed plenty of game time there. He has made 166 outings, two of which have come this term. It remains to be seen at this stage though whether he will stick around.
