The Seattle Seahawks made some tough decisions about the offense this offseason. Some weren't their first choices. General manager John Schneider didn't want to trade wide receiver DK Metcalf, for instance, but after Metcalf asked again to be dealt, he was. Other choices were even tougher.
This included veteran wide receiver Tyler Lockett. He had proven to be not only a very good football player but also an elite human being. That last part translated to him being a great leader in the locker room. But Lockett was also very expensive.
Seattle saved $17 million by moving on from Lockett ahead of free agency. While he had once been among the team's top two receivers, he had diminished. Each passing season brought diminishing returns.
Ex-Seattle Seahawks icon Tyler Lockett probably coming to the end of his career
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is [what Lockett's new team](https://12thmanrising.com/tyler-lockett-breaks-seahawks-fans-hearts-latest-move) is just learning, but he might still be worth the money he is being paid by the Tennessee Titans. His deal is for just one season and $4 million. But Tennessee is finding that the receiver simply isn't going to offer much on-field production.
In Week 1 against the Denver Broncos, Lockett, who has lost a bunch of quickness and never had much strength to fend off defenders, only saw one target from [rookie quarterback Cam Ward](https://12thmanrising.com/former-seahawks-tyler-lockett-learns-his-first-lesson-titans), but didn't catch it. In all likelihood, Lockett is going to have a lot of those kinds of games in 2025.
Where Lockett could help, and probably is, in helping teach Ward how the NFL works, and how to handle himself as a professional. To be honest, the receiver could do that as part of the coaching staff. He doesn't have to be playing.
In 2024, Tyler Lockett made far too many business decisions where he would catch a pass and fall to the ground before he was touched. While he had always done that to some degree, he did it more last season, often falling short of a first down. Had he stayed on his feet, he probably would have moved the chains.
The Titans need Lockett to be productive, however. He is a smart receiver and can find the holes in a defense. He could be a great check-down target for Cam Ward, but he might be too far past his prime to contribute much.
Of course, Seattle Seahawks fans could have warned Titans fans about this. In 2023, he caught 79 passes. Last year, he had only 49, even though the Seahawks threw the ball more. Tyler Lockett's days playing football are probably close to being done, but his days of being a fantastic person are eternal.
