Sunderland injury update as thoughts turn to next weekend's home game with Villa

Le Fee missed yesterday’s game at Selhurst Park because of an unspecified injury issue sustained in training last week.

The 25-year-old remained on Wearside to complete his recovery while the rest of Sunderland’s first-team squad headed to London, but Le Fee does not expect the problem to be a major one.

“It doesn’t seem too serious, but we’ll see,” said Le Bris. “He’s [Le Fee] an important player for us because we can combine the winger position with a number ten’s ability, I think to generate a bit more unpredictability in our game.

“It should have been really interesting to play with him, but it wasn’t an option today. It wasn't too bad.”

Sunderland’s defensive resilience was the bedrock of their draw in south London, with Nordi Mukiele and Omar Alderete combining at the heart of the Black Cats’ back four to successfully neuter the Palace attack.

Robin Roefs was in superb form in goal, making crucial second-half saves from Jean-Philippe Mateta, Daichi Kamada and Christantus Uche, but while Le Bris was delighted with his side’s defensive display, he would ideally have liked to see them pose more of a threat in attack.

The Black Cats failed to record a single effort on target, posting an xG of just 0.36, which is something Le Bris will want to see change in the remainder of his side’s away games this season.

“I think we prepared this game properly, and the picture was the picture we expected during the week,” said the Sunderland boss. “We played a good first half, dominating the ball, but it's not enough. You have to create chances, you have to threaten the opponent's defence.

“So, we had a couple of opportunities - maybe one more, two more, to cross and be a bit more impactful in the box - but it didn't happen. It’s possible, but the first layers are positive, now we have to push more.”

Sunderland return to action next Sunday when they host struggling Aston Villa at the Stadium of Light.
