Man City release statement as Ricky Hatton plans confirmed before Manchester United fixture

Manchester City host Man Utd in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The two sides will meet at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday afternoon, just hours after the tragic loss of one of Manchester's most iconic figures. Hatton, 46, was found dead on Sunday morning at his home in Hyde in Tameside, Greater Manchester. His death is not being treated as suspicious.

A statement from Greater Manchester Police read: "Officers were called by a member of the public to attend Bowlacre Road, Hyde, Tameside, at 6:45am today where they found the body of a 46-year-old man. There are not currently believed to be any suspicious circumstances."

The former world boxing champion was a devoted City supporter and used to enter the ring to their iconic club anthem 'Blue Moon.'

A Man City statement read: “Manchester City are devastated to learn Ricky Hatton has passed away, aged 46. Ricky was one of City’s most loved and revered supporters, who will always be remembered for a glittering boxing career that saw him win world titles at welterweight and light-welterweight. Everyone at the Club would like to send our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends at this difficult time. We can confirm there will be a minute’s appreciation ahead of today’s game against Manchester United.”

Manchester United replied to the social media post with a message that read: “Sending our heartfelt condolences to Ricky’s loved ones on the loss of a legend of our city.”

Taking to social media on Sunday, City legend and current Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany paid tribute to the Manchester icon. "We'll miss you Ricky. Our thoughts are with the family and friends. "Rest in peace legend".

During his boxing career, Hatton held multiple world championship and UK titles. Additionally, he has also been named Fighter of the Year in 2015. Hatton was due to return to the ring in December.
