BROWNS - RAVENS Matchup Preview

The Browns (0-1) came up short against the Cincinnati Bengals, 17-16, in the season opener on Sept. 7.

Cleveland’s defense contained Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow to 113 passing yards, but the offense failed to match the intensity with missed opportunities and two crucial missed kicks from rookie Andre Szmyt.

The Browns outgained the Bengals, 327-141, and led 16-14 midway through the third quarter. Despite the positives, the end result was a painful beginning to what could become a gauntlet in the first quarter of the season.

Browns quarterback Joe Flacco returns to his roots in his first game back in Baltimore since 2018. Flacco spent 11 years in the flock and won a Super Bowl with the franchise.

Cleveland’s running back room is starting to take shape. Rookie Dylan Sampson had a strong start to the season, and the Browns will welcome rookie Quinshon Judkins for his NFL debut today.

Jerry Jeudy and Cedric Tillman lead a receiving corps that unveiled a future star in rookie tight end Harold Fannin Jr. last week. He hauled in seven receptions for 63 yards.

The defense -- guided by 2023 Defensive Player of the Year Myles Garrett -- ranks second in the NFL after one week. Its next assignment might be the toughest test in the league. Not only are they tasked with slowing down a dual-threat quarterback, but Cleveland will also need to halt bruising running back Derrick Henry.

All eyes will be on Szmyt. Whether it’s a case of the yips or opening-day nerves, his job will likely be on the line in today’s matchup. Cleveland let go of veteran kicker Dustin Hopkins after a poor preseason performance.

The offense will need to have an explosive day to keep up with Baltimore’s litany of firepower. Cleveland ranked last in the NFL in points per game last season, averaging just 15.2. The Ravens had the best offense in the league, posting 424.9 yards per game.

The Ravens (0-1) were part of one of the greatest NFL opening-week games in recent memory as they were bested by the Buffalo Bills, 41-40.

Quarterback Lamar Jackson, who finished second in MVP voting last year, finished 14 of 19 for 209 yards and two touchdowns, while adding six carries for 70 yards and one touchdown.

Zay Flowers continues to climb the receiving ladder. He hauled in seven receptions for 143 yards and one touchdown last week against Buffalo.

Running back Derrick Henry offers a physical workhorse mentality. He had 18 carries for 169 yards and two touchdowns, taking home the best overall rushing performance of the week.

The Ravens defense allowed a league-worst 497 yards of total offense against the Bills. Most of that was through the air as Baltimore was stiff in the trenches.

Baltimore leads the all-time series, 37-15. The teams have split the season series the last four years.
