Manchester United described Ricky Hatton as "a legend of our city" as they sent their condolences following the death of the Stockport-born fighter.

It was announced on Sunday that Hatton had been found dead at his home in Greater Manchester.

United issued a statement, saying: "Sending our heartfelt condolences to Ricky’s loved ones on the loss of a legend of our city."

The Premier League also released a statement, saying: "The thoughts of everyone at the Premier League are with Ricky’s family, friends and those associated with Man City at this incredibly sad time."

A police cordon was in place at Hatton's home in Gee Cross, Hyde on Sunday morning.

Greater Manchester Police confirmed that a body had been found and said that the death is not being treated as suspicious.

The devastating news comes months after the legendary boxer announced his return to the ring with a fight planned in December.

Hatton had spoken openly about his struggles with mental health and drug addiction. He survived suicide attempts and overcame a fall out with his family, who he made up with after addressing his own mental health.
