The former Ajax, Juventus and Manchester United stopper gave an in-depth interview to La Gazzetta dello Sport, during whichhe spoke about his decision to join the Bianconeri instead of Liverpool, the lessons he learned in Italy and his future life under Sir Alex Ferguson at Old Trafford.

What van der Sar said about Donnarumma and Totti

The Pink Paper asked van der Sar what he made of Donnarumma following his recent €27m transfer from Paris Saint-Germain to Manchester City, and whether the Italy national team captain is currently the best in Europe.

He replied: “He’s one of the strongest, as Bayern’s Neuer has been in recent years before his injury. Among my favourites are also Ederson and Alisson.”

Van der Sar also gave a brief, tongue-in-cheek answer to a question relating to his role in the EURO 2000 semi-final, which saw Italy beat the Netherlands on penalties.

Asked specifically if he ever thinks back to Francesco Totti’s iconic chip, he replied: “Never. That semi-final should have ended long before the penalty shootout.”
