Manchester United Women thrashed newcomers London City Lionesses 5-1 in the Women’s Super League at Hayes Lane on Sunday afternoon.

United created the game’s first chance when a cross was whipped into the box, but Melvine Malard failed to hit the target.

Moments later, Jana Fernandez brought the French forward down in the penalty area, and United were awarded a penalty.

Captain Maya Le Tissier, making her 100th appearance for United, stepped up to convert, sending her effort into the middle of the goal.

London City got their first chance on 13 minutes as Kosovare Asllani delivered a free kick. Lucia Corrales put it back into the box, but Alanna Kennedy missed from close range.

Anna Sandberg almost doubled United’s lead, curling a free kick to the far post, only for goalkeeper Elene Lete to save her effort.

Man United doubled their advantage in the 33rd minute, as Jayde Riviere latched onto Le Tissier’s pass and fired her shot past Lete.

Despite taking a two-goal lead, the Red Devils continued to push for more but were unable to add to their tally before the break.

Two minutes after the restart, Malard got on the scoresheet, placing a shot into the far corner after receiving a pass from Jess Parker.

The France international was on target again in the 50th minute, heading the ball home from Celin Bizet’s cross.

The hosts pulled one back in the 76th minute, as Nikita Parris headed a cross past goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce.

The goal gave London City the momentum and created chances from set-pieces, but they could not score.

Three minutes from time, Park sealed the victory for Man United. The summer signing carried the ball up the pitch before unleashing a shot into the top corner.

The win takes United to the top of the standings on goal difference.

They return to action on Thursday against Norwegian side Brann in the Women’s Champions League qualifiers. They must overturn a one-goal deficit to qualify for the league phase of the competition.
