Aston Villa 1-3 Chelsea: Kerr scores late to secure all three points

Chelsea claimed a hard-fought three points in the Midlands, defeating Aston Villa 3-1 to keep pace with league leaders Arsenal.

It was not a game that always went in the way of the Blues, as they struggled defensively in the first half, conceding a lot of chances that Villa failed to put away.

Aggie Beever-Jones put the visitors in the lead before Ebony Salmon scored a wonder goal to level the affair.

But with the help of a deflection off Missy Bo Kearns, Kiera Walsh's attempt found the back of the net - going down as an own goal for Villa.

A late goal from the returning Sam Kerr added the cherry on top to a much better second-half display from the Blues.

Story of the match

It was a scrappy start to the match as both teams struggled to create anything that carried any serious threat.

The best chance in the opening stages came in the 11th minute when Guro Reiten squared the ball to Catarina Macario in the centre. However, the American was unable to guide her attempt on target, putting the ball narrowly wide of the goal.

Chelsea were the side to take the lead in the 22nd minute as Aggie Beever-Jones added to her fantastic goal-scoring record for the Blues. A cross from Ellie Carpenter deflected, catching Ellie Roebuck out, as the 22-year-old buried the ball into an empty net.

From this point, the Blues were expected to gain control of this match and pile the pressure on Villa; however, the hosts did not allow this to happen as they fought back.

They got their reward for this in the 34th minute when Ebony Salmon received the ball from Chasity Grant and struck a fantastic attempt from the edge of the box into the back of the net. Hannah Hampton was left rooted, unable to get close to the shot.

There was a clear momentum shift from this point as Villa gained the ascendancy of the encounter. Chelsea's defence looked shaky as the hosts had the much better opportunities, but were denied by Hampton, who had kept the Blues in the game in the first half.

Sonia Bompastor did not wait to make changes in the second half as Erin Cuthbert, Sandy Baltimore and new signing Alyssa Thompson entered the pitch ahead of the second half.

Cuthbert instantly settled into her position, beginning to give Chelsea a higher degree of control in midfield than they had enjoyed at any point in the opening 45 minutes.

The Blues were beginning to get into more dangerous positions as Thompson got herself involved in the attacking phases straight away.

The away side very quickly got themselves back into the lead, only ten minutes into the second half, following what was deemed an own goal from Missy Bo Kearns.

The ball fell to Kiera Walsh on the edge of the box from a corner. The midfielder wasted no time in pulling the trigger. The shot looked like it was initially going wide, but a deflection off Kearns guided it past Roebuck, into the bottom corner.

The hosts would have felt unlucky to be behind after an impressive first half, but knew they would have to try and find a way back into this game.

Sam Kerr entered the field for the first time in 20 months to loud applause from the visiting supporters who were eagerly anticipating this moment after she was not brought on against Manchester City.

Villa would keep fighting into the 7 minutes of injury time, but they would get no rewards for their efforts, rather the opposite in fact.

Chelsea delivered the ball in from a corner. A scramble in the box left the ball at the feet of Sam Kerr, who had her first attempt blocked, but found the bottom corner on the second attempt to score her 100th goal for the Blues and get her name straight back on the scoresheet.

It was not the end to the game that Natalia Arroyo and her side would have hoped for, but they could certainly take pride in the fact that they had caused the reigning champions a lot of issues and made it an uncomfortable game for them.

For the Blues, they continue their 100% record in this title defence, but will likely be looking for a higher degree of control in their next match.

Player of the match

Hannah Hampton

It's easy to keep giving the plaudits to Chelsea's attackers, who are so often the stars of the show, but Hannah Hampton deserves heaps of praise today.

She stepped up when Chelsea were not at their best, ensuring that her side remained in it and reaped the rewards when they inevitably gained back control of proceedings in the second half.

Hampton made some crucial saves, and ultimately, the fact that Chelsea left with three points is something that the goalkeeper should get the credit for.

Chelsea's last line of defence is certainly a good one.
