"I think we are a better team" - Amorim believes his team have progressed in the past year

Ruben Amorim spoke to the media ahead of derby day as Manchester United make the short trip across the city to face their arch-rivals, Manchester City.

The Red Devils have had a mixed start to the season, currently sitting 11th in the Premier League, having won one, drawn one, and lost one.

A clash with Manchester City is not ideal for United as they aim to build on the victory against Burnley, but Amorim is confident that his team can win at the Etihad as they did last year.

The head coach spoke to the media before the game. This is what he had to say.

On the goalkeeping situation

Manchester United brought in a new goalkeeping recruit on deadline day, securing the signing of Senne Lammens for an initial fee of around £18m from Royal Antwerp.

Ruben Amorim hinted that United opted for potential over experience when deciding what goalkeeper to pursue.

"We are really pleased. He’s a goalkeeper with a lot of potential. I know that we are in a moment that the goalkeeper needs to be really strong and have a lot of experience but we are also in the moment that we have to look at the present, but with a focus on the future.

"So it’s a little bit of both. A guy with great potential that is one more option, one more option to play, and he’ll be ready."

However, Amorim has confirmed that Altay Bayindir will be the goalkeeper to start in the Manchester derby this weekend, whilst Lammens continues to adapt to his new environment.

"It’s the same thing that I do with different positions. Of course, it’s not the same, but Altay is going to continue because it’s a different league, it’s a different country, training, ball, so we try to maintain that and they will fight for the position. So, for me, it’s clear, Altay will start."

No matter the circumstances, a game against their arch-rivals is always vital for Manchester United to perform in.

Their opponents have not had the greatest of starts to the new season and actually sit below the Red Devils in the Premier League table. Nevertheless, this remains one of United's biggest tests this season, especially away from home.

Ruben Amorim did not shy away from this fact in his pre-match press conference, highlighting City as a top opponent and personally naming Pep Guardiola as the best coach in world football.

"It’s the same thing. It’s a top team with, for me, the best coach in the league. A team that is really hard to imagine how they are going to play, they change all the time.

"But we are prepared for that and we believe in our team and I have that feeling. So it’ll be a very good game, we know what to do, we have one more training. The table in the moment doesn’t matter.

"I just worry about maintaining the same principles, the way we fight for every ball, the small details that sometimes we drop a little bit, not in these games – so I’m more comfortable in these games – but we will be ready against a very, very good team."

But, United and Amorim will have fond memories of the Etihad Stadium from last season when they scored two goals in three minutes to steal all three points at the death. United's head coach insisted that his team has progressed since that match and that they are ready to do it all again.

"I think we are a better team. If you see any aspect, the data, we are a different team. We are ready to play the game but we have to show on Sunday, and I think we are a better team today."
