The Seattle Seahawks are coming off a tight, but disappointing 17-13 loss to their division rivals, the San Francisco 49ers. While the game was tight until the end, the 49ers maintained control for most of the game.
On third downs, the 49ers were 7 of 14, and 3 for 3on a 95-yard opening possession that resulted in a touchdown. The time of possession battle, as a result of the Seahawks giving up third-down conversions at a high clip, resulted in a lopsided time of possession battle. 37:58 for the 49ers compared to 22:02 for the Seahawks.
While theSeahawks’ defense underwhelmed compared to lofty expectations, one bright spot on the defense was defensive back Josh Jobe.
Jobe Gets Props from PFF
Coming into the season, most would have guessed that if there were aSeahawks’ cornerbackbeing praised, it would be Devon Witherspoon or Riq Woolen. However, in Week One, Josh Jobe was the defensive back being celebrated.
PFF named Jobe the best overall coverage defender in Week One. PFF writer John Kosko explainedJobe’s high evaluation.
“Against the 49ers in Week 1, Jobe delivered a breakout performance. Hewas targeted five times, allowing just one catch for 1 yard, forcing an incompletion, and recording his second career interception,”Kosko said.
Kosko then highlighted how Jobe locked down his receiver matchups against the 49ers.
“He locked down his receiver on 71.4% of targets — fifth-best among corners — and posted an 83.9% positive grade rate, which would rank first for the entire 2024 season,”Kosko said. “His 90.2 coverage grade trailed only two players in Week 1, a stellar debut for a player who finished 92nd inPFF’s end-of-season cornerback rankings last year.”
Jobe’s stellar performance came out of seemingly nowhere for the undrafted corner out of Alabama, buthe’s been exceeding expectations his whole career. He made the Philadelphia Eagles roster as an undrafted rookie and played in Super Bowl LVII. Now, there is a belief in Jobe within the Seahawks organization.
Mike Macdonald Believes in Josh Jobe
The emergence of Josh Jobe was one of the few bright spots in a frustrating Week One for the Seahawks, and his performance is creating excitement about what he is capable of moving forward.
One of the most excited people overJobe’s lockdown game was head coach Mike Macdonald.
John Boyle and Ari Horton, in their September 8 article forSeahawks.com, wrote about Macdonald expressing his belief in Jobe.
“Josh is ready to go,”Macdonald said. “He’s always going to be a big part of the game plan. He’s competing for more snaps, and I thought he played a tremendous football game. Played physical, played smart, played disciplined, finishing plays right. I thought he played a great game.”
Macdonald also reiterated that if someone like Jobe continues to produce at the same level, they will likely receive more playing time.
“You go out and produce, why would we not play you?”Macdonald said.
Jobe’s next opportunity to prove himself will be against the Pittsburgh Steelers and a returning DK Metcalf.
