The San Francisco 49ers committed a lot of money to Brock Purdy this offseason.
Unfortunately, they might be without him for a while.
Purdy is currently dealing with a variant of turf toe and a shoulder injury.
He’s expected to be out for at least two weeks, but his absence could extend a little further.
With that in mind, John Middlekauff of The Volume expressed his concerns about the Niners’ quarterback’s durability:
“Here’s the one concern I have for Brock: he’s kind of been hurt a lot. When I think Patrick Mahomes, I think Josh Allen, I think Lamar Jackson, do these guys miss games? No player wants to get injured. He got injured a couple of years ago, missed three games in the middle of the season. Obviously, he got injured in the NFC Championship Game. He got injured here, which is a little concerning. He threw the game-winning touchdown, came back in the game, did victory formation, and then the next day you say he got a toe and a shoulder [injury]? That’s tough,” Middlekauff said.

Purdy hasn’t been the type of player who usually misses time with injuries, but that doesn’t mean he hasn’t been constantly banged up.
Also, it’s not like most teams are comfortable just benching their hurting quarterbacks at the first sign of an injury.
The Niners could’ve kept Purdy under team control for years without having to give him such a lofty contract extension.
Their decision to give Purdy that big contract raised doubts among NFL fans and analysts alike.
Then again, they clearly believe he’s the right guy to lead the team.
He’s already led them to the Super Bowl once.
Still, given how he’s performed whenever one or several of his elite weapons haven’t been out there, there are reasons to be worried.
His decision-making hasn’t always been the best, and while the numbers are there, he doesn’t always meet the eye test.
Whatever the case, the Niners will continue to roll with him for the long run, or at least for as long as his body keeps on keeping on.
