The New England Patriots are rolling with Drake Maye for the time being.
He didn’t look good in his first start of the season, but they’re still committed to them for the long run, at least for the time being.
More importantly, it seems like people within the organization never had big expectations for him this season, knowing that he’s not that experienced:
“Some people within the building see #Patriots QB Drake Maye ‘a little bit closer to a rookie’ rather than a QB in his second year,” per Andrew Callahan.

Callahan says this is important context in regard to how the team treats Maye and views his performance.

That could go a long way in actually assessing his performance.
If they think he’s ready to take a big leap and should be one of the best quarterbacks in the game, chances are they’re just going to be disappointed and think of this season as an absolute failure.
But if they just want him to get his toes wet, learn the ropes of the game, and develop for next season, that’s a whole different story.
Maye has the physical traits to be a star at the next level, and he’s flashed glimpses of strong play.
Even so, he didn’t get to play that much in college, and he always looked like a bit of a project when the Patriots took him with the No. 3 pick.
It won’t be wise to give up on him after one bad year, even if he struggles mightily this season.
That doesn’t mean they have to look the other way and ignore his shortcomings.
Still, these things take patience at times, and if they want to keep comparing him to Josh Allen, they should remember that Allen didn’t always appear to be a star.
