The Buffalo Bills took a pair of big hits to their secondary during training camp, losing rookie cornerback Maxwell Hairston and veteran Tre’Davious White.
Two weeks into the season, one of them has returned — though the Bills lost another key defensive back.
The Bills announced inactives for Sunday’s game against the New York Jets, with White active for the first time this season. The Bills also lost nickel cornerback Taron Johnson, who was inactive after having missed practice during the week.
The Bills also listed other inactives — wide receiver Curtis Samuel, defensive back Jordan Hancock, linebacker Shaq Thompson, tackle Chase Lundy, defensive tackle Ed Oliver, and defensive end Landon Jackson.
Tre’Davious White Had Been Optimistic for a Return
White had expressed optimism in the days leading up to Sunday’s game. Speaking to WGR 550 reporter Sal Capaccio on Thursday, the veteran admitted that he was frustrated with his injury setback but trying to focus on the positives.
“Definitely frustration with it, but the best thing is, I was able to walk off the field under my own power,” he said, via SI.com. “So I count those blessings for sure.”
White had suffered a pair of major injuries at the end of his first stint with the Bills, tearing his ACL in 2021 and his Achilles tendon in 2023. White said he was grateful that the current injury was nowhere near as serious as those, which sidetracked his career and cut out long chunks of his career to rehab.
“I’ve been good, man. Been through it before, but it’s not as bad of a thing as getting carted off the field. So that’s a blessing in itself,” White said.
With White out in Week 1 and Hairston starting the season on injured reserve, the Bills turned to rookie cornerback Dorian Strong in their win over the Baltimore Ravens. He performed well, earning some praise from the team’s coaching staff.
“He did not blink. He went out there, did not flinch, challenged,” said Bills defensive coordinator Bobby Babich. “Certainly, there’s some things he’s got to improve on, but that was one of the highlights, is the way Dorian played. That’s credit to him and his preparation.”
Bills Bring in Help
The Bills already lost defensive tackle Ed Oliver for Sunday’s game after a mid-week injury. Following one of the best performances of his career in last week’s win over the Ravens, Oliver was hurt in practice when a teammate stepped on his foot, leading him to wear a walking boot.
The Bills brought in some help at defensive line prior to Sunday’s game, elevating defensive tackle Zion Logue and rookie linebacker Keonta Jenkins from the practice squad for the game against the Jets.
Logue had some experience with the Bills last season, appearing in two games after the team poached the then-rookie from the Atlanta Falcons’ practice squad in October. Logue also earned praise from his teammates ahead of this week’s game.
“Zion’s a heckuva player,” said defensive tackle DaQuan Jones on Friday. “I’m happy for him to get an opportunity this week.”
