Manchester United were handed a humiliating defeat in the Manchester derby on Sunday, falling 3-0 to rivals Manchester City.

Phil Foden gave the home team the lead at the 18-minute mark, directing Jeremy Doku's pull-back past Altay Bayindir. Erling Haaland increased the lead shortly after half time and nearly made it 3-0 moments later but somehow hit the post with an open goal.

Haaland sealed the game midway through the second half, outrunning the United defence and slotting home. City could have had more, but United's defence can thank the woodwork it wasn't any worse. Ruben Amorim's flops were again played off the park on an embarrassing day for everyone associated with United.

Here's how Daily Star Sport rated the players performances for both sides at the Etihad Stadium.

Altay Bayindir, 5 - Had an early shaky moment when he almost lost control of the ball. Seemed overwhelmed when Haaland charged towards him to score the second goal.

Leny Yoro, 6 - Kept pace with Doku, who switched sides to set up the opening goal. Was replaced by Harry Maguire to boost United's goal threat.

Matthijs de Ligt, 5 - Competed well with Haaland until the Norwegian slipped between De Ligt and Luke Shaw to score the second goal. A risky pass nearly led to a goal.

Luke Shaw, 5 - Performed decently in the first half but was exposed as the makeshift centre back he is when Haaland powered past him. Careless for the third goal, too.

Noussair Mazraoui, 6 - Made a confident return in his first start since the Europa League final until he was caught off pace for the second goal. Subbed just after the hour mark.

Manuel Ugarte, 6 - A surprising recall, yet Ugarte was United's standout player in the first half, performing at a level far removed from his 45-minute stint at Grimsby. However, he couldn't stem City's second-half surge.

Bruno Fernandes, 5 - Fernandes was culpable for failing to track the runner for another goal conceded by United, three weeks after Emile Smith Rowe slipped past him at Fulham.

Patrick Dorgu, 4 - Dorgu could have intercepted the play switch that eventually led to Foden's goal. He had opportunities to assist Sesko, but his crossing was woeful.

Bryan Mbeumo, 6 - Mbeumo saw plenty of the ball but made no impact in the first half before being thwarted by an excellent save from Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Amad, 5 - For probably the first time, Amad played on the left of the two No. 10s and fluffed a volley. He was nowhere near as influential as he was last season.

Benjamin Sesko, 6 - Sesko posed an early challenge to Donnarumma and had United's only attempts on goal in the first half. He was quieter in the second half.

Manchester City

There was a moment in the first half when he batted the ball away under pressure from United attackers at a corner - it’s the kind of stuff that instills confidence in your keeper.

Also produced a wonder save in the second half.

Abdukodir Khusanov, 7 - While playing out of position, Khusanov didn’t look out of place. The young Uzbek has struggled to find a spot in the starting side, but proved himself as a City player on Sunday.

Ruben Dias, 6 - Didn’t have a lot to do throughout the game, but was solid when called upon.

Josko Gvardiol, 6 - Another good showing for Gvardiol. It was a quiet game for the Croatian, but he defended well when City needed him to step up.

Nico O’Reilly, 7 - It was a big task for the youngest, who stepped up perfectly against the United attack.

Rodri, 6 - Still looking rusty after his time off, Rodri needlessly gave the ball away on a couple of occasions. He needs more game time to get back to the Ballon d’Or-winning form of 2023/24.

Bernardo Silva, 7 - Another solid display from the City stalwart, linked up play nicely and helped out in defence.

Tijjani Reijnders, 6 - Had a chance to put himself on the score sheet, but turned his effort just wide of the mark. The former AC Milan man has had a tough couple of weeks, but looked at home on Sunday.

Phil Foden, 8 - The man of the moment, Phil Foden loves a derby day. He skipped between the lines and proved to be a constant thorn in the side of United defenders.

Jeremy Doku, 7 - Doku’s performances can often be a mixed bag, but he was at his best on Sunday afternoon. He was direct and positive on the ball, providing two assists for his spoils.

Erling Haaland, 9 - Got his goal with a lovely dink, only to commit one of the worst misses in Premier League history a couple of minutes later.

However, this was a different Haaland; he showed off his fast feet and passing ability as he pulled the strings in the City attack.

Haaland grabbed his second soon after his horror miss, rushing past the United defence and looping the ball past Altay Bayindir.
