Manchester City release statement as club barman sacked for incident during derby vs Man United

Manchester City’s official fan support team was forced to issue a statement following the actions of one of the Etihad Stadium’s bar staff during Pep Guardiola’s side’s 3-0 win over Manchester United on Sunday afternoon. Phil Foden opened the scoring for the Cityzens with a guided header, before Erling Haaland added two more to take his tally against the Red Devils to eight goals in nine appearances.

Heading into the highly anticipated derby, neutrals and supporters of both clubs expected plenty of drama in M11. In the end, though, the contest proved one-sided, with City tightening their grip over their fiercest rivals in recent years - and the away end emptying long before the final whistle.

The real drama came off the pitch, as City were forced to release a statement after a member of bar staff inside the stadium was spotted wearing the colours of the opposition.

City supporters flocked to social media after spotting a member of bar staff in the home concourse wearing a Man United shirt while pouring pints, warning it could rile up some fans and calling for immediate action. It didn’t take long for the photo to go viral, prompting Man City Fan Support to release a statement. They wrote (see the post and reply below):

"Thank you for making us aware of this. We can confirm that this individual has now been removed from their position."

Not only did he lose his job, but he would likely have been even more distressed by the current situation at Man United. The Red Devils have only scored from open play in one Premier League game this season and sit 14th after four matches, with one win, one draw, and two defeats, having also crashed out of the League Cup at the first time of asking following a penalty shootout loss to fourth-tier side Grimsby Town.

The contrast in the Mancunian football scene couldn’t be more chalk and cheese after this weekend. Even though City are wrestling with issues of their own following a trophyless season last term, United’s problems run far deeper - and there appears to be no way out of the hole dug since the years before Sir Alex Ferguson’s arrival.

Those being served a pint or two on Sunday certainly had the last laugh, and Amorim's side's fixture list doesn't get any easier from ehre on in, with them facing both Chelsea and current leaders Liverpool over the next month.
