NBA star and Wake Forest University alum Chris Paul will be returning to his alma mater this week to appear at the Face to Face Speaker Forum.

The event will be held Tuesday starting at 7:30 p.m. in the Lawrence Joel Veterans Memorial Coliseum located at 2825 University Parkway.

Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson was originally scheduled to speak at the event but will be unable to attend, with the university citing “unforeseen circumstances.”

The university announced plans to reschedule Johnson’s appearance. Tickets which had already been purchased will be transferrable to the Chris Paul event and additional tickets are available for purchase at facetoface.wfu.edu.

“Face to Face sincerely apologizes for any inconveniences caused by the rescheduling of the Magic Johnson keynote. The postponement is beyond our control,” Face to Face Executive Director Sue Henderson said via the press release.

Henderson also expressed gratitude for Paul’s willingness to make time in his schedule for the event at the last minute.

“Chris Paul is, once again, stepping up when Wake Forest needs him, and his conversation with (CBS sports reporter) Tracy Wolfson will be one that we all will long remember and cherish,” Henderson said.

Paul, 40, signed with the Los Angeles Clippers earlier this summer. He is a Winston-Salem native who gained recognition for his talent at West Forsyth High School and Wake Forest before starting his NBA career.

His professional accomplishments including being named an all-star 12 times and winning two Olympic gold medals.

Paul most recently visited Winston in July to promote his line of plant-based snacks.

During the stop in town, Paul addressed speculation that the upcoming NBA season will be his last in the league.

“I said ‘I’m thinking about it’ but I never made any official announcement,” Paul said, referencing an interview on a sports podcast. “Life is life, so I’ll figure it out.”

Paul's return to Winston-Salem comes a month after a Superior Court judge reversed the convictions of four men in the 2002 murder of Paul's grandfather. The decision is currently on hold pending appeal. Paul has not publicly commented on the matter.

The Face to Face Speakers series began in 2020 and features conversations with notable individuals across a range of disciplines.

Paul will be the first speaker in this year’s lineup.

The other speakers scheduled for this year are: former Republican presidential candidate and U.S. Sen. Mitt Romney on Nov. 6, former Trump National Security Advisor and Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster on Feb. 26 and “Wicked” actress Cynthia Erivo.
