Andre Onana had a debut to forget with Trabzonspor as his new team suffered a 1-0 defeat to Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig. Onana, on loan from Manchester United, was immediately put into the starting line-up for the match against Fenerbahce. The Istanbul club also debuted a new goalkeeper, former Manchester City No.1 Ederson, following his departure from the Etihad.

The Brazilian keeper will have been the more satisfied of the two, celebrating a victory and a crucial last-minute save that prevented an almost certain equaliser.

For Onana, it was another challenging day. The 29 year old could have done better with what turned out to be the winning goal from Youssef En-Nesyri in first-half stoppage time, reports the Manchester Evening News.

The Cameroon international managed to parry a shot from ex-United midfielder Fred but failed to push the ball away from goal. He was then slow to rise as the ball was passed to En-Nesyri to score from close range.

Onana's performance wasn't helped by some shoddy defending leading up to the goal, as Trabzonspor carelessly lost possession and failed to clear their lines. It was another moment to forget for the United loanee.

Despite this error, Onana's overall performance was reasonably positive, making eight saves for ten-man Trabzonspor.

United's choice to let Onana go was swayed by the last-minute acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, while Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim believed Onana would benefit from a break from the intense pressure of the Premier League.

"We saw Andre had a very, very good season in Inter,' said Amorim. The quality is there, but we are in the club sometimes, in the moment, things are getting harder and harder. And you can be really experienced.

"But in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail. Sometimes you need a change. I think we understood that he needed a change. Sometimes it's hard to point why.

"It's the performance, the moments. The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, and it was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers.

"I wish the best for Andre. He was really good at working, trying to help the players.

"Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level. That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from Andre."
