Mac Jones is 1-0 as the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. He is three more wins away from a unique financial bonus attached to a very specific contract incentive.
The only question is whether he has enough time to get there.
With every week of the NFL season that goes by, it gives Brock Purdy another week to get healthy. At what point would the 49ers be willing to keep their $262 million signal-caller on the bench?
Mac Jones needs to stack wins.
It might sound silly but Jones needs to win as many games as possible in as little time as possible. San Francisco would obviously love nothing more than to go undefeated. You’re always trying to win. I know.
That’s not what I am talking about.
Purdy is expected to miss anywhere between two and five weeks with a variant of turf toe and a minor issue with his non-throwing shoulder. “Next week will be tight,” said Adam Schefter on Sunday morning.
Jones will be the starter in his absence. The former No. 15 overall pick completed 26 of 36 pass attempts for 279 yards and three touchdowns without an interception in his 49ers debut. He threw darts.
WHAT A THROW. WHAT A CATCH.

You really couldn’t ask your backup quarterback to play any better.
Big money is waiting.
Jones needs to hope Purdy is out at least three more weeks from a financial standpoint. The 49ers will play the Cardinals, Jaguars and Rams in that order.
Jones can put some serious cash in his pocket if he wins all three of those games as the starter.
He signed a two-year deal with San Francisco during the offseason. It pays a guaranteed $5 million with a potential total value of $11.5 million with incentives.
One of those incentives is based on win totals.
Mac Jones will trigger a $400k bonus with four wins as the starting quarterback for the 49ers in 2025. That number jumps up to $1,000,000 with 10 wins as the starting quarterback.
Sunday’s win over the Saints is win No. 1. Purdy most likely won’t be available next weekend. I doubt he is ready to go the week after which leaves me with a lot of hypothetical questions.
What happens if Purdy is almost healthy but not fully healthy in Week 5?Do they rush him back because of his new contract?
Would San Francisco stick with Jones anyway if he goes 3-0 in his first three games? What if he goes out and wins again?
There are a lot of “ifs” involved with these scenarios but it is something to watch! Both from a standpoint of the San Francisco 49ers wanting to play the guy who gives them the best opportunity to win and from a standpoint of Mac Jones’ contract incentives.
