Denver Broncos All-Pro safety Patrick Surtain II suffered a scary injury vs the Indianapolis Colts.

After Surtain was rolled on, it appeared that he was favoring his ankle. The reigning Defensive Player of the Year had to be helped off the field and was seen walking gingerly on the sideline.

Almost immediately, Surtain was seen heading into the blue medical tent. Having to be assisted off the field is never a good sign, and the star safety may have suffered a rather significant injury.

Losing Surtain would be horrible for the Broncos, who depend on him to act as an anchor in the secondary and the defense.

Surtain secured Defensive Player of the Year after bringing in four interceptions, with a league-leading 132 yards off those interceptions. He also brought in 45 total tackles.

Surtain also had a 61.3 completion percentage and 58.9 passer rating when targeted by opposing quarterbacks. His ability to fly all over the field and be one of the best coverage safeties led to his notching his first DPOTY nod.

The hope is that Surtain only sustained a stinger to his ankle and can return in the game.

Reports are indicating that he is working through the ankle injury to determine if he can make it back into the game. The Broncos need him, as the Colts are currently keeping pace with their high-powered offense.

At the time of this writing, the score is 21-13 in favor of the Broncos, but there is plenty of football left to play. It would be believed that Surtain might not come back until the second half.
