Dallas Cowboys wide receivers CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens come up big in win

CeeDee Lamb’s dropped passes in the Dallas Cowboys’ season opener were a major reason the team lost to the Philadelphia Eagles. The Oklahoma product responded with a monster game in the team’s home-opening 40-37 overtime win against the New York Giants on Sunday.

Lamb did have another dropped pass, but caught nine balls for 112 yards.

Quarterback Dak Prescott talked about Lamb having a bounce-back game after a disappointing Week 1.

“Last week was last week,” Prescott said. “That wasn’t the beginning that he was proud of, and he made sure he took the necessary steps to get himself focused to do whatever he needed to do to get his confidence right. He practiced the right way, as he always does, and I think I told you on Thursday, I expect a big game from him.

“He went up there and was just CeeDee, made a couple of amazing catches. That’s credit to his resilience, his character, and how much this team believes in him.”

The Cowboys’ offense got off to a slow start in the first half, including another drop from Lamb, and the wide receiver talked about how the team regrouped to score 27 points in the second half.

“We just had to take a step back and just take a breath,” Lamb said. “We wasn’t ourselves, we wasn’t moving the ball, we wasn’t running the ball.”

George Pickens scores first touchdown as a Cowboy

Teammate George Pickens had a big day with five catches for 68 yards and a 6-yard touchdown — his first with the Cowboys — while also drawing multiple pass interference penalties.

Lamb praised his performance.

“Yeah, you started to understand how much of a demon he really is. He took over the game,” Lamb said. “He’s electric. You give him an opportunity, he drew like five PI’s [pass interference penalties].”

Pickens called the game the happiest he’s ever felt on a game day and reflected on scoring his first touchdown with Dallas.

“Super excited, super happy. It’s definitely that time,” Pickens said. “It was great [getting coach Brian Schottenheimer’s] first win. ... It’s like a milestone day kinda. I got my first touchdown, new on the team. He’s a first-year head coach, got his first win, so I feel like it’s definitely a good day.”

When the Cowboys traded for Pickens to team him up with Lamb, games like this were what they imagined. Pickens’ TD catch gave the Cowboys the lead with 52 seconds remaining, and his final catch of the game, a 27-yarder, helped set up Brandon Aubrey’s game-winning field goal in overtime.

The Cowboys have scored 60 points through the first two games, and if Lamb and Pickens continue to produce at this level, the offense could become one of the NFL’s best.
