DETROIT -- Jared Goff couldn’t do much wrong in the team’s 52-21 win over the Chicago Bears.
That is, until the Detroit Lions quarterback tried to leap into the crowd after throwing his fifth and final touchdown of the game. Goff hit receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown for their third touchdown connection of the afternoon, this time on fourth-and-4 while already leading by 24 points.
Goff watched St. Brown jump into the leap zone with ease, then tried to do the same. He graded the celebration with brutal honesty after the game.
“Bad again. Really bad,” Goff said, poking fun at the situation. “I know. Really bad. I wanted to get up there, because I’ve seen it for years now, I’ve wanted to get into the Lions leap zone.
“I’m like, ‘All right, this is my chance.’ But, bad. I was waiting for someone to kind of help me out and pull me up there, and I didn’t get any help. Not good.”
Goff got to laugh at himself after lighting up the scoreboard, so all in all, it was a great day. The Lions quarterback moved into second place on the franchise leaderboard for passing touchdowns. His 119th touchdown toss put him in front of the legendary Bobby Layne.
He finished with 334 yards and five touchdowns while completing 82.1% of his passes. Goff led the Lions to 8.8 yards per play, a franchise record, and is tied for the NFL all-time lead with two games with at least 300 yards, 80% completion percentage and a passer rating of at least 155.0.
Goff will have to wait a couple of weeks before he can try to get into the stands in a cleaner fashion back at Ford Field. But there is no doubt he wouldn’t change much about today’s performance.
“We got a stud at quarterback who can handle a ton of information, a ton of information,” Lions coach Dan Campbell said. “And can get us in the right play, he’s pinpoint accurate and he’s got weapons.”
