Monchi is interested in a player from an old club, which could stir things up with his former fans.
Aston Villa are already looking ahead to the January transfer window and the club’s President of Football Operations Monchi has identified a target who he feels would be ‘an ideal fit’ for the team’s playing style.
The Villans signed the likes of Jadon Sancho and Harvey Elliott on loan over the summer in attempt to bolster their attacking options. However, a less than desirable start to the Premier League season sees Unai Emery’s side in the bottom three and yet to register their first win.
Aston Villa are also yet to open their goalscoring account for the campaign. The Villans are the only club in England’s top seven leagues still without a goal on their tally, which has raised numerous concerns around their season at this early stage.
Aston Villa ‘target’ La Liga winger
Villa are looking to further bolster their options in attack and have found themselves linked with Sevilla’s Ruben Vargas. Described as a ‘disruptive’ player in attack, Fichajes has reported that Villa are among the clubs eyeing a potential move for the Switzerland international.
However, the winger is a highly valued part of the team and selling him doesn’t appear to be an outcome the club are interested in addressing. The report claims that the possibility of Vargas leaving Spain to pursue a move to the Premier League is starting to ‘cause concern’ within Sevilla.
Interest being shown in the 27-year-old has set off ‘alarm bells’ at the Spanish club, who are very aware that losing him in the January window will be a huge blow to their season. Sevilla are looking to build on a disappointing run in the 2024/25 season, which saw them finish just one point above the relegation zone.
As things stand, Vargas is reportedly remaining silent over the transfer speculation but there is very much an awareness from Sevilla that they could be hit with offers they cannot refuse from a financial point of view in the new year.
Ruben Vargas is liked by Monchi
Monchi is ‘well aware’ of Vargas’ potential and reportedly sees him as an ‘ideal fit’ for Aston Villa’s style of football as they consider further options to bolster a so far lacklustre attack.
However, the report claims that there is talk of there being a ‘betrayal’ if Monchi successfully signs Vargas for Villa at any point. The sporting director spent his entire playing career at Sevilla, so there is certainly a sense of loyalty that lingers there. Signing Vargas risks damaging his relationship with the Sevilla fans.
Monchi joined the Andalusian side from his local club San Fernando, where he played at youth level. He made his debut for Sevilla’s reserves when he was 20 before being promoted to the senior team.
Monchi also worked with Sevilla as their director of football prior to his retirement at just 30. He helped discover talents including Sergio Ramos and Jesus Navas. He reportedly sourced a profit of around €200 million (£173m) from successful sales of existing players.
