Yoane Wissa, Jacob Ramsey & Anthony Gordon: Newcastle United absentee list and expected return dates.

Newcastle United’s 2025-26 season is finally up and running after clinching their first win against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

And came via their £69million debutant Nick Woltemade, whose header in the 30th minute proved to be the winner in a narrow 1-0 victory at St James’ Park.

The 23-year-old has only had four training sessions with his new teammates but was thrown straight into the starting line-up with Newcastle’s other new striker, Yoane Wissa, unavailable due to a knee injury.

Eddie Howe’s side now turn their attention to their Champions League league phase opener at home to Barcelona on Thursday. And ahead of the match, we take a look at Newcastle’s current absentee list and when each player is expected to return:

Yoane Wissa

Wissa joined Newcastle from Brentford for £55m on deadline day but is yet to make his debut after sustaining a knee injury on international duty with the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

While it’s still to be confirmed by the club, it’s understood scan results have confirmed the 29-year-old will be sidelined for the next four to five weeks.

What’s been said?

Speaking ahead of the Wolves game. Howe said: “He won't make this game, I saw him for the first time yesterday. He's feeling the effects of the injury sustained just before he came off so we're going to have to see how he is.

“I think he'll go away for tests and maybe see a specialist to see. So unfortunately, I can't give you that update.”

Estimated return date

Brighton & Hove Albion (A), 18/10.

Jacob Ramsey

Ramsey, a £39million summer signing from Aston Villa, made his debut as a substitute in the 3-2 defeat at home to Liverpool before starting the following game away to Leeds United.

However, the 24-year-old’s full debut was cut short after he hurt his ankle in a tackle with former Newcastle midfielder Sean Longstaff.

What’s been said?

Howe said last Friday: “Jacob Ramsey's the only other injury concern that we have, he'll miss the game [Wolves] having suffered from that tackle against Leeds.

“His ankle swelled up at half time, meant he had to come off and unfortunately I think he'll be missing until the next international break so that's a big blow.”

Estimated return date

Brighton & Hove Albion (A), 18/10.

Anthony Gordon

Gordon was handed a three-match domestic ban for a red card challenge on Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk. He has missed games against Leeds United and Wolves, and will miss the visit to AFC Bournemouth on Sunday, however is eligible for Thursday’s Champions League clash against Barcelona.

What’s been said?

On the red card, Howe said: “I've seen it once and very rushed. It was as the game had restarted, so naturally I wanted to see it and wanted to move on very quickly. I think there's no intent he's gone in.

“Of course, probably too quickly. I think he's tried to pull out, not commit any damage to Virgil as he's gone in to slide. It's an unfortunate one, I think he's slightly unlucky with it.

“Everyone's told me it's a clear red. My first opinion was slightly different, but maybe I've got the wrong angle. So I've got sympathy for him.”

Estimated return date

Barcelona (H), 18/09.
