Newcastle United are massive - Barcelona superstar talks ‘unique’ Alan Shearer love

Barcelona goal machine Robert Lewandowski has discussed his early love for Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer.

Robert Lewandowski has opened up about wearing a Newcastle United shirt with Alan Shearer on the back as a youngster.

Toon icon Shearer was one of the sport’s leading goalscorers in the 1990s and early 2000s. Fast forward to the present and Lewandowski is approaching the twilight of his career, having decimated defences across Europe since 2005. A staggering 731 career goals place the Pole among the greatest strikers to ever play the game.

Lewandowski has been at Barcelona since 2022 and is preparing for a huge Champions League clash at St James’ Park. The tie evokes nostalgia with Toon supporters who remember the epic contests between the clubs over two decades ago.

However, the occasion will also be special for one of the leading superstars in world football. Lewandowski, as quoted by Barca Universal, has shared how he used to replicate Shearer’s famous celebration.

"When I was young, I remember I had a Newcastle shirt with the No.9, Alan Shearer,” he said. “It was a gift from the family, and I wore it a lot because he was at the top back then. And of course, I used to mimic his famous celebration; it was something unique."

Jamie Reuben on Champions League draw

Newcastle co-owner Jamie Reuben is relishing the challenge of facing five former European Cup winners. PSG, Marseille, Benfica and PSV Eindhoven make up the other previous champions.

“Some very big teams, as you say,” he said. “Five champions. So we're definitely in illustrious company, but we're looking forward to it and (there are) some great fixtures ahead.

“I think it was one of my greatest nights ever. I was there and it was an unbelievable performance, our first home game back in the Champions League for so many years. Let's hope we can give that a repeat. We take that as a compliment, the fact that people don't like to come to St James' Park. We have turned it into a fortress in recent years.

“We're looking forward to being back in the Champions League. It's always a special atmosphere, Champions League nights at St James' Park. I hope we'll be up for the occasion.”
