Newcastle United's all-time European appearance makers ahead of Champions League return

Several Newcastle United heroes have made it to double digits in the past, and now Eddie Howe’s current group of players can add to their appearance tally.

After a year out, the Magpies are back in the Champions League, and have been treated to a tasty home tie for their return.

Newcastle United welcome Barcelona to St James’ Park for the first time in over 20 years. Some fans will remember the iconic meeting between the two sides in 1997, where Tino Asprilla became a Newcastle legend with his hat-trick against Barca to hand them a truly historic win.

Elsewhere, Newcastle will play the likes of PSG, PSV, Bayern Leverkusen and Athletic Club in what is the first time they will feature in the new league phase of Europe’s premier competition.

Eddie Howe’s players can make as many as eight appearances in the league phase, bringing them closer to Newcastle’s current European record appearance holders.
