They visited a club buzzing on their long-awaited arrival at a new home and suffered a day when it felt nothing went right.
Then they went to a team buoyed by two wins.
So the timing has been unfortunate. But there are reasons of their own doing which have seen the Seagulls open an away league campaign with two defeats for the first time since 2018-19.
And those errors will be the focus this week ahead of a visit from a much-improved Tottenham Hotspur.
Antoine Semenyo twice pushed the Seagulls towards this frustrating setback at the Vitality Stadium.
First with an unnecessary shove which sent Max De Cuyper crashing into boards close to the pitch at this small, tight venue.
Then with the penalty after Evanilson was just as needlessly impeded by Jan Paul van Hecke.
Evanilson had got up and felt no ill-effects from a first-minute tangle with Jack Hinshelwood.
The Albion man was not so fortunate and had to be helped off with an ankle injury.
He looked in even more discomfort than De Cuyper when he hobbled off shortly after Alex Scott had fired the hosts into the lead while the Belgian was still out of position following treatment.
It felt like one of those ill-fated days at that point when nothing was going Albion’s way - even though home fans and players seemed to think differently in reference to decisions by referee Peter Bankes.
But there will be such moments in games across the season and the way Albion lifted themselves was admirable.
While the first-half events may have put them on an unsteady footing, that period after Kaoru Mitoma soared to meet a delicious cross from Yankuba Minteh was ultimately when the game was lost.
They were unable to push on from there, despite looking the more forceful side for a while.
Then they shot themselves in the foot, firstly with Lewis Dunk’s poor pass with colleagues upfield.
Albion still managed to get men back to seemingly stop the attack before van Hecke fouled Evanilson in careless manner and Semenyo was as ruthless with the penalty as he had been with De Cuyper.
“We win together, we lose together, so we have to show the right reaction again,” Hurzeler said.
“We have to stand up again and that’s what we have done in the past, so that’s we have to do in the future.
“It’s always about the way you react. You can fall but you have to stand up.”
Hurzeler was pleased with the performance and felt his side had control of the game.
From a more detached perspective, that seemed a generous assessment. In the first half, it seemed Bournemouth felt in control of events when they did not have the ball but were back in a good shape.
Minteh was the one who looked like he might get in behind.
The hosts were rather less comfortable in that early second-half period in which Albion equalised and looked the better side.
Like most teams, they are at their best when they inject some tempo and drive into their play.
That happened on Saturday but not for long enough.
So where do they stand now?
As Albion observers, we have been spoilt in recent years by the way they have started seasons
There has generally been a cushion of early points to reassure.
Now it feels like a time to hold nerve and faith.
Other than in central midfield, it feels like the cliched “best team” a manager is supposed to know has emerged.
The latest engine-room set-up was pretty much a non-starter due to Hinshelwood’s injury.
All four games have been on a knife-edge, even the 2-0 defeat. One of them tipped Albion's way, the other three did not.
This is not the sort of start to which we have been accustomed and is partly of their own making.
Hold your nerve. The margins are small and Albion have scope to improve.
But another big afternoon at the Amex would be very timely when Spurs visit.
Play as well as they have at times - even at Bournemouth. But for longer,
