Monchi is said to be plotting a raid on former club Sevilla in the January transfer window.

Reports in Spain claim Aston Villa’s president of football operations is targeting Ruben Vargas.

Fichajes say Monchi believes Swiss international forward Vargas, 27, would be an “ideal fit” for Unai Emery’s squad, who have failed to score a single goal in the opening four matches of the new Premier League season.

Villa’s interest is said to have “set off alarm bells” at the La Liga club.

Vargas only joined Sevilla in January from Augsburg and has scored twice in 14 matches for the club.
