Andre Onana suffers bad start to Trabzonspor loan as Ederson gets one over him

Andre Onana had a debut to forget with Trabzonspor as they suffered a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Fenerbahce in the Turkish Super Lig. Onana, who recently joined Trabzonspor on loan from Manchester United, was immediately put into action against Fenerbahce. The Istanbul club also debuted their new goalkeeper, former Manchester City No.1 Ederson, following his departure from Etihad.

The Brazilian shot-stopper will undoubtedly be the more satisfied of the two, having secured three points and making a crucial last-minute save to prevent an almost certain equaliser. For Onana, it was another challenging day. The 29-year-old could have done better with what turned out to be Youssef En-Nesyri's winning goal in first-half stoppage time.

The Cameroon international managed to parry a shot from ex-United midfielder Fred but failed to push the ball away from goal. He was then slow to rise as the ball was passed to En-Nesyri to tap in from close range.

Onana's performance was not helped by some shambolic defending leading up to the goal, with Trabzonspor carelessly losing possession and failing to clear their lines. It was yet another moment for the United loanee to erase from memory.

Despite the error overshadowing his debut, Onana did show some promise, making eight saves for ten-man Trabzonspor.

United's choice to let Onana depart was shaped by the deadline day acquisition of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp, whilst Old Trafford boss Ruben Amorim believed Onana would gain from stepping away from the intense scrutiny of the Premier League.

"We saw Andre had a very, very good season in Inter,' said Amorim. "The quality is there, but we are in the club sometimes, in the moment, things are getting harder and harder. And you can be really experienced.

"But in this club, the pressure is sometimes so hard on every detail. Sometimes you need a change. I think we understood that he needed a change. Sometimes it's hard to point why.

"It's the performance, the moments. The bad luck in some moments was hard on him, and it was hard on us. Our thinking is to have a change in the goalkeepers. I wish the best for Andre. He was really good at working, trying to help the players.

"Sometimes you can have all the quality in the world, but sometimes you need to change the environment to return to your level. That was a feeling, not just from us, but also from Andre."
