Manchester United’s dismal start to the season continued with a lacklustre derby defeat at Manchester City on Sunday. An equal start was undone by Phil Foden’s headed goal on 18 minutes, and from there United never looked like getting back into the contest. Erling Haaland’s second-half brace sealed City’s first derby win in a year and heaped more pressure on Ruben Amorim. However, while legitimate questions can be asked of Amorim’s tactics and overall record, former United greats Roy Keane and Wayne Rooney both questioned the desire and passion of the players on the pitch. I think Shaw’s been getting away with murder at United for years. Always injured, never quite fit, making excuses. “He gets a few games under his belt and he’s making decisions like he doesn’t want to tackle people. You look at all the stats in the derby match there, not one yellow card. “We’re giving it the build-up, it’s the Manchester derby, it’s raining and set up for a few tackles flying in. Man United walk off the pitch, how are you physically? You should be shattered. You shouldn’t be able to get out of bed for a week after a tough game.”Wayne Rooney questions ‘passion and desire’ of Manchester United players for same reason as Roy Keane rantOn his BBC Sport podcast, United’s record goalscorer Wayne Rooney also addressed the lack of tackles from United players in the derby.“You can lose against Manchester City, they are a good team,” he began. “But I’m watching it. I didn’t see a tackle.“Even when it goes to 2-0, 3-0, I didn’t see anyone saying, ‘I’m not having this’ and and taking the yellow card or putting a tackle in, and [showing] that passion and desire.“I want to be as supportive and as positive as I can be on the manager and the players, but it’s very difficult and to sit here and say we’re seeing a progression. [To say] at least we’re seeing things which will get results in the near future, but we’re just not seeing any of that. And it’s very difficult.”Both Keane and Rooney were known for putting their bodies on the line for the cause, so if they can identify a lack of fight from United players, fans will hope Amorim can also see the same issues.
