'Have your lows': Newcastle United ace opens up about personal struggles after leaving on loan

Newcastle United loanee Matt Targett has opened up on his struggles on Tyneside before completing his loan move to Middlesbrough.

While the Magpies look forward to a Champions League clash against Barcelona, there are several players who are out on loan, trying to impress Eddie Howe.

Newcastle United adopted a more cutthroat approach to their summer transfer window, selling multiple longstanding stars, including Sean Longstaff and Callum Wilson.

Matt Targett was one of the departures before the transfer deadline, joining Middlesbrough on loan for the 2025/26 season. The 29-year-old has enjoyed a bright start to his season, assisting on his debut and scoring in his most recent appearance against Preston North End.

The defender is finally getting the game time he has been hoping for, and in a recent interview, Targett hinted at personal struggles on Tyneside.

Matt Targett hints at ‘dark times’ at Newcastle United

Tino Livramento was playing ahead of Targett at Newcastle, despite the youngster being a natural right-back. It was a sign that Targett needed a move away from the club if he wanted to play regular football.

Boro are flying in the Championship so far, winning four of their opening five games. Their fans can thank Targett for his efforts in their latest game against Preston to help them secure a point.

Targett received messages from Jack Grealish and John Ruddy after his goal for Boro, which was the first time he scored since November 2021. While he has started well with Boro, Targett has not forgotten his recent struggles.

“It’s been a long time since I scored one and I’m not blessed with goalscoring ability! But I’m delighted to help the team,” he told Teesside Live.

“Obviously when you’re not playing and you have dark times, these moments are more special when they come. It’s not all highs in football. You inevitably have your lows. But you remember these moments and you build on them.”

Targett’s Newcastle contract runs out in 2026, so this loan move is the last opportunity to show Howe that he has what it takes to be a part of his squad.

Matt Targett shares his start to life away from Newcastle United

Targett is next in line to be in action for Boro when they welcome West Brom to the Riverside Stadium on Friday evening, where he will likely start following his bright performances.

It has been confirmed by the player that he left Newcastle due to a lack of minutes, but he should not have the same issues at his new club.

Thankfully, Targett has been given a warm welcome by his new teammates, and believes that Rob Edwards’ style of football is much better for his game.

“It’s been easy to settle because they’re a great bunch of lads,” he added.

“There was quite a bit of change at the club this summer. But credit to the coaching staff and all the lads, they’ve all made me feel very welcome, which is great. It’s been pretty easy for me.

“The role is different. I would say my natural qualities aren’t as a one-vs-one attacker. I’d say I prefer it when I have someone to link up with. I have played it a few times before. It’s a tricky position. But, I’m enjoying it and I’m open to learning. I’m here to help the team. Hopefully I am doing that and continue to do so.”
