'It is so obvious' - Wayne Rooney tells Ruben Amorim the change he has to make to save Manchester United job

Ruben Amorim is under fresh pressure as the head coach of Man Utd after they lost to Manchester City.

The Portuguese head coach is under fresh scrutiny in his role at Old Trafford after they were comfortably beaten by Man City at the weekend. It means United have recorded their worst start to a new league season since 1992, with just four points from their opening four matches of the campaign.

Amorim also holds the unwanted record of the worst win rate of any permanent United manager since World War Two, with just 31 points from 31 matches in the Premier League. If that form continued across an entire league campaign, United would be in a genuine relegation battle by the end of the season.

The United head coach has drawn plenty of criticism for his tactical approach and his perceived stubbornness in not changing their formation, regardless of the opposition. Amorim has always maintained that there is too much media focus on his formation and that, due to the fluid nature of the sport, they regularly change shape during matches anyway.

Speaking after the derby defeat to Man City, Amorim reiterated he would not change his philosophy at United, though club legend Rooney believes he has no choice if he is to keep his job.

Although his 3-4-2-1 approach might work against certain opposition, Rooney believes there are many matches when United need to deploy three central midfielders in order to ensure they can compete with the majority of sides that also use a three-man midfield.

"In quite a lot of league seasons that is relegation form," he told the Wayne Rooney show. "What is important when you're trying to implement a new style is you win games as well while you're doing that."

"I have had my time as a manager, and I know how it works, and I know how it is when someone else looks and critiques your formation. I can understand that, but it is so obvious," Rooney added. "If you're struggling, you have to put three in midfield and give yourself a chance to compete."
