Ethan Ampadu issues Leeds United dressing room message after heartbreak at Fulham

Captain Ethan Ampadu says the Leeds United dressing room was “quiet” following the agonising late defeat to Fulham on Saturday but encouraged his teammates to refocus with a big game at Wolves next weekend.

Gabriel Gudmundsson’s cruel own goal means Leeds have yet to pick up a point on the road after two away games. Leeds remain on four points after four matches but have not scored in their last three and not at all from open play.

While United scarcely threatened the Fulham net, barring efforts from Sean Longstaff and Brenden Aaronson either side of half time, the team were deserving of a point with a battling shift and were a whisker away from a third straight clean sheet.

Speaking after the game, Ampadu - playing his first game since the opening day win over Everton upon return from a knee injury - unpacked the mood of the dressing room and sent a key message to his teammates.

Asked about the atmosphere in the changing room by club media, Ampadu replied: “Quiet, disappointed - but there is a lot in that performance that we can take as a baseline for the rest of the season with us.

“Obviously, at the end, the end result is what matters so we are hurt, we are gutted but it is a very long season. We have got stuff to improve on, we have got stuff to take on but we are going to enjoy the ride.”

He added: “We had a couple of chances on a counter-attack. There is a lot to take from that and to be positive with.

“Obviously, like I said, we are going to be disappointed and it is going to hurt tonight but from tomorrow on, we have got to crack on and get full focus. It is as simple as that. Like I said, we are going to be hurt now.

“It is the Premier League, home or away, no game is easy. It is the league that we want to thrive in. It is the league that we want to show ourselves in and next week is an opportunity to do that.

“We want to change the result from today so we are going to push, we are going to rally and we are going to keep going.”
