Quirk's brace helps Cherries remain unbeaten with win at Gwalia

In terrible conditions, Sophie Quirk continued her brilliant start to life in Bournemouth by netting a brace, after Jenna Markham had opened the Cherries’ account six minutes into the second half.

The victory sees the Cherries remain at the top of the National League Southern Premier Division as one of only two sides still undefeated after four games, along with Watford.

Interim boss Helen Bleazard’s side went into the game in Cardiff just a point ahead of their hosts, but they had the better of the early chances.

Katie James struck a free kick into the wall before her in swinging corner was met by Jessica Hennessy, her header cleared at the near post.

Quirk was causing problems and saw a low effort saved by Gwalia keeper Benedicte Haaland from the angle after 35 minutes.

Markham struck the post with the best chance of the half for the Cherries just second before halftime, after she turned a Charlotte Harris cross onto the base of the upright and the ball rolled to safety.

Bournemouth continued on the front foot after the break, and thought they had taken the lead when Kenni Thompson’s corner was bundled in only for it to be chalked off for a foul.

But three minutes later, Markham handed the visitors the lead, as she was on the spot to turn the ball home after a cross from Thompson was spilled.

Quirk drew a good save from Haaland before Thompson hit the post from a corner and then from the edge of the box, before the former Portsmouth forward got her first of the afternoon.

Substitute Gemma McGuinness crossed from the right and picked out Quirk, who did the rest, finding the back of the net with her head.

Abby Jones was the next to threaten the Gwalia goal, shooting over the bar, as the Cherries continued to press forward.

Quirk netted her second of the game in stoppage time, with Jones the provider as she slipped the ball in for Quirk to find the bottom corner to confirm the victory for the Cherries.

Georgia Wilson hit the crossbar in the final act of the game as Bournemouth made it 10 points from a possible 12 to continue their fine form in tier three.
