Manchester United’s dismal start to the season continued yesterday as they lost 3-0 to Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium.
As a result of the defeat, United equalled their worst ever start to the league season, with just four points from four games. They last suffered the same defeat in the 1992/1993 season.
United were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup on penalties by League Two side Grimsby Town, leaving the FA Cup as their only realistic hope of winning a title this season.
According to Manchester Evening News, manager Ruben Amorim still retains the backing of the Man United hierarchy despite the poor start.
MEN reports that a source close to Amorim describes it as ‘incredible’ that his position is not under threat after United’s poorest start to a league campaign in 33 years.
The Portuguese has failed to impress since replacing Erik ten Hag last November. United have picked up 31 points in 31 games, the lowest of any side in the league since his arrival.
Man United backed Amorim heavily during the summer transfer window, particularly reinforcing the attack with the additions of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha, and Benjamin Sesko.
However, United’s attack have shown slight improvement, scoring just once from open play in the league. The defensive frailties from last season persist, and the decision not to sign a quality central midfield is proving to be costly.
Amorim has been repeatedly urged to change his 3-4-2-1 formation, but has remained adamant. He now needs to start delivering to silent critics.
While he currently retains the club’s backing, the club would not hesitate to pull the plug on him if results do not improve.
United face Chelsea next at Old Trafford on Saturday, and Amorim will be hoping his side gets a victory to ease the pressure on him.
