Saliba trains, Odegaard missing as Arsenal gear up for Bilbao

Martin Odegaard is a major doubt for tomorrow’s Champions League opener with Athletic Bilbao after missing today’s training session at London Colney.

The captain aggravated a shoulder problem in Saturday’s 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest and was forced off in the 18th minute. It was the second successive home game he’s failed to reach half-time, having first suffered the issue against Leeds last month. On both occasions, he was replaced by Ethan Nwaneri.

On a more positive note, William Saliba was involved. The Frenchman made a surprise return to training on Friday after twisting his ankle at Anfield, but later admitted to Mikel Arteta that he needed more recovery time. He could still make the travelling squad, though it wouldn’t be a shock if Cristhian Mosquera continues to deputise.

The Spain under-21 international has looked the part since arriving from Valencia and will know Bilbao well, having played almost every game in La Liga last season.

Elsewhere, Ben White – on the bench at the weekend – wasn’t spotted in front of the cameras, while Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus all remain sidelined.

Arsenal will travel to Spain this afternoon with Mikel Arteta due to face the media from San Mames at 7pm local time.
