Manchester City have sacked a bar worker who turned up for the Manchester derby wearing a United shirt.
A man was pictured wearing a dark United away strip from the 2018-19 season, which prompted furious City fans to complain to the club. A City supporter contacted the club’s fan support page to raise the issue, and attached a picture of the United fan behind one of the bars on the concourse.
The club replied: “Thank you for making us aware of this. We can confirm that this individual has now been removed from their position.”
United endured a miserable afternoon and slumped to a 3-0 defeat. Afterwards, manager Ruben Amorim said the club would have to sack him if they want to change his 3-4-3 system that failed again at the Etihad Stadium.
The club’s leading scorer of all-time, Wayne Rooney, has questioned whether his former club are progressing enough under Amorim. Since his appointment as manager, United are 17th out of 17 Premier League clubs to have remained in the division.
“I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be on the manager and the players,” Rooney said on The Wayne Rooney Show.
“But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we’re seeing things that will get results in the near future. We’re seeing none of that, and it is very difficult. There was an image towards the end of the game where I saw the Manchester United fans leaving.
“You could hear the fans singing Amorim’s name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game. You know the game is over and I think they were very disappointed in what they were seeing. It is hard to see how it continues. What are the patterns? What are we seeing what might improve the team moving forward?”
