Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim is convinced that his style of play and system are not the problems of the club, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The Red Devils suffered a 3-0 defeat at the hands of Manchester City on Sunday and could have conceded more had the hosts been more clinical.
Man United have stuck with a 3-4-3 formation since Amorim became boss, and the Portuguese has no plans to switch things up despite the woeful performances and results since his arrival.
“Ruben Amorim is convinced that the problem is not about the system and probably not even about the majority of the players,” Romano said on his YouTube channel this morning.
“He is convinced it is about the mentality of the team.”
The Man United boss was backed in the summer transfer window, but the failure of the club to add a solid defensive midfielder to their ranks could prove to be their undoing.
Bruno Fernandes has had problems adapting to a deeper midfield role after the head coach opted for others in the number 10 role.
Neither Casemiro nor Manuel Ugarte has done much to provide much-needed protection to the back-three, which has made the Red Devils very goal-prone.
Amorim has brilliant ideas and plans, but his current players are not suitable for his style.
While their mentality needs to be addressed, the Portuguese also has to be flexible and should be open to adapting his style to get the best out of his current team.
Failure to do that could lead to more heavy defeats going forward this term, and Amorim is unlikely to last long in the dugout if he sticks to his current methods.
Man United are back in action on Saturday when they host Chelsea at Old Trafford, and while the Blues – who were not particularly convincing in their 2-2 draw with Brentford on Saturday – have not won a league game there for 12 years, fans will not be confident of their side getting a result.
