Athletic Bilbao manager Ernesto Valverde has spoken glowingly about Mikel Arteta and Arsenal as both sides prepare to face off in the Champions League.
The Gunners will begin their European campaign with a trip to San Mames on 16 September, aiming to secure a positive result in their opening match.
Valverde believes Arsenal are among the strongest contenders for the trophy this season. He pointed to their tactical intelligence, technical strength, and the winning culture instilled by Arteta.
“Arsenal are totally focused on this match. They are one of the favourites to win the Champions League thanks to their technical and tactical ability, and the winning spirit that [Mikel] Arteta has instilled in them.
This experience must serve to make us better and enable us to compete more effectively.”
The Spanish coach explained that games at this level demand complete focus. He admitted that his players must use the occasion to learn and grow against such top opposition.
Excitement for the competition
Valverde also underlined the thrill of playing in Europe’s most prestigious club competition. He explained that every side involved takes the tournament seriously and gives everything to succeed.
“We’re very excited to be playing in this competition, the most important international club competition. The teams hold nothing back, they play with everything they have.”
The Bilbao boss made it clear that his side cannot afford mistakes against a ruthless team like Arsenal. He stressed the importance of capitalising on any chance that comes their way.
“We will have to be very careful and take advantage of opportunities. Arsenal will not be forgiving.”
Valverde is also counting on the backing of the San Mames crowd to push his team forward. He believes the occasion will inspire both the players and supporters alike.
“Our fans are going to come very motivated. It’s the start of the Champions League and we’re playing against a high-level opponent, the kind that Bilbao likes.”
Meanwhile, Arsenal have been boosted by the return of William Saliba to training. The French defender has recovered from the injury he sustained against Liverpool and could feature in Spain.
