Liverpool maintained their perfect Premier League record as they grabbed an injury-time winner at Burnley to reclaim their place at the top.
Arsenal responded perfectly to the 1-0 defeat at Anfield, claiming a commanding 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest.
Meanwhile, Wolverhampton Wanderers’ miserable start to the new campaign continued as Newcastle United condemned them to their fourth league defeat in as many matches.
Below we look at some of the major talking points from the weekend’s Premier League action.
Nick Woltemade hits the ground running at Newcastle
Newcastle United lost their best player Alexander Isak to Liverpool in the summer. They received a record £125 million fee for the Swede, but that did not make it any less disappointing for their supporters who would have wanted the club to keep their prized asset on Tyneside.
However, the fans were delighted to see Isak’s replacement Nick Woltemade, who the club signed from Stuttgart in a deal worth up to £69m, make an instant impact at St James’ Park. The German marked his debut with a goal that sealed Saturday’s home game in favour of Newcastle against Wolves.
Donnarumma’s dream debut
Manager Ruben Amorim opted against starting his new goalkeeper Senne Lammens for Sunday’s Manchester derby and continued with Altay Bayindir. However, Pep Guardiola threw Gianluigi Donnarumma straight in goal and the 26-year-old impressed with his display.
Donnarumma kept a clean sheet and produced a spectacular save to deny Bryan Mbeumo. His instant impact prompted Wayne Rooney to question why United didn’t pursue a deal for the former Paris Saint-Germain star instead of Lammens.

Liverpool find a way to win despite not being at their best
Arne Slot’s side spent around £450 million in the summer to bring in the likes of Isak, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. But despite making several blockbuster additions, Liverpool have not been entirely convincing with their performances in the Premier League this season.
However, the Reds have still found a way to win all their matches. They failed to break the deadlock at Burnley in normal time, but Mohamed Salah grabbed the winner deep in stoppage-time after Hannibal Mejbri handled the ball.
Graham Potter under huge pressure after Tottenham humiliation
West Ham United slumped to their third Premier League defeat in 2025-26 on Saturday, with Tottenham Hotspur scoring three unanswered goals to cruise past the Irons. It was a dismal display from Graham Potter’s men in front of their home supporters as they were completely outplayed by their London rivals.
The latest defeat has put the scrutiny back on Potter, who earned himself a respite after leading his team to a 3-0 victory against Forest before the international break. The English boss must improve results soon if he wants to stay in his role at the London Stadium.
Madueke silences critics
Not many were convinced when Arsenal splashed £52m to sign Noni Madueke. But his recent displays suggest the Gunners have spent their money well on the 23-year-old.
Madueke capped a great week with an excellent performance in Arsenal’s one-sided triumph over Forest. This came four days after scoring his first goal for England against Serbia.
