From communication breakdowns to breakout performance: Inside the Lions’ bounce back

DETROIT -- What a difference a week makes.

The Detroit Lions couldn’t get out of their own way in their season-opening loss last week. They were hampered by communication issues on the offensive line, a non-threatening passing attack and a defense that couldn’t make the big play.

Detroit’s coaching staff and players preached during the week how those issues were identifiable and fixable. And while that might be coachspeak everywhere else, the Lions held true to their word in their 52-21 win over the Chicago Bears.

The offensive line was so much better, and with an assist to playing at Ford Field, there were no glaring communication issues in the trenches. Detroit’s defense made some big-time plays and finally broke through for its first four sacks and two takeaways of the young season.

Jared Goff led an ultra-explosive offense, passing for 334 yards and five touchdowns. And the Lions quarterback fed Amon-Ra St. Brown all day long, with the All-Pro wideout enjoying his first game with three touchdown catches. Heck, Jameson Williams needed only two catches to cross the century mark.

“I mean, all the concerns we talked about last week, they were corrected. They were fixed,” Ben Raven stated on the latest Dungeon of Doom podcast. “The offensive line communication, you didn’t see those problems. The big plays were there all day long. The defense creating takeaways, the defense getting pressure, scoring in the red zone four out of four on the first four trips inside the red zone went for touchdowns.”

This ability to correct course speaks to something deeper in the Lions’ DNA under Dan Campbell. As Raven pointed out, “The Lions have still not lost back-to-back regular-season games since October 2022. And that is the power of Dan Campbell.”
