Arsenal dealt fresh injury worry ahead of Athletic Club as Champions League reality clear

Ben White is a doubt for Arsenal's Champions League clash against Athletic Club on Tuesday after picking up a fresh injury, football.london understands.

The defender has not featured for the Gunners since the opening day win against Manchester United on August 17. The 27-year-old picked up an injury in the 1-0 victory over Ruben Amorim's side but did return to the matchday squad on Saturday against Nottingham Forest.

White did not train with his teammates on Monday, however, due to what is being described as a "minor issue". It's now unclear if the former Brighton & Hove Albion man will make the trip to Bilbao for the Champions League league phase opener on Tuesday. Jurrien Timber, who played the full match against Nottingham Forest at the weekend, is expected to continue in White's absence at right-back.

It's the latest injury blow for Mikel Arteta, with Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus also sitting out the training session. Odegaard limped off in the first half against Ange Postecoglou's side with a shoulder injury, while Saka is still nursing a hamstring injury picked up last month.

William Saliba and Christian Norgaard did train on Monday, though, and are in contention to face Athletic Club. With Manchester City to come on Sunday, it remains to be seen if Arteta will take any risks with the pair.

Speaking after Arsenal's 3-0 win against Nottingham Forest, Arteta provided an update on Saliba. The Gunners boss said: "He trained yesterday, and he did the whole session, and he was OK.

"I spoke to him afterwards, and he said ‘I think I need a few more days’. The turnaround has been too quick for the extent of the injury. When a player says that, don't push it, and I think [Cristhian] Mosquera was very, very good."

On Mosquera the Spaniard added: "You've just seen today and what he did in Anfield, very, very hard, he's going to push them, and this kid wants it a lot, and he's so willing to learn. He's got already some great qualities that fit very well any position that we want to use him in relation to the connections and the qualities of the other defenders. So, we'll see."
