Cincinnati Bengals star Joe Burrow faced an injury on Sunday against the Jacksonville Jaguars that will take him out for at least three months.
Burrow has elected to undergo surgery for a Grade 3 turf toe injury, NFL reports. Currently, Burrow is in the process of deciding which surgeon will perform the procedure.
The Bengals have begun looking into available free-agent quarterbacks, per Bengals Wire.
Turf toe is an injury to the big toe joint. It occurs when the toe stays planted while the heel lifts, forcing the toe into hyperextension, according to Cleveland Clinic. This movement can overstretch or tear the soft tissues and ligaments around the joint.
With a Grade 3 tear, like in Burrow's case, the soft tissues in the toe are fully torn, and the MTP joint may even be dislocated. Swelling and pain are severe, making it nearly impossible to move the toe.
Burrow went down with 8:36 left in the second quarter after being sacked by Arik Armstead. As the play unfolded, several players crashed down on top of him.
At first, Burrow limped toward the sideline, but after a few steps he collapsed onto the turf. He spent several minutes being examined in the blue injury tent before trying to head to the locker room.
About 15 feet from the tunnel, he stopped and leaned on athletic trainers for help making it inside.
Burrow was first listed as questionable, but was later ruled out and did not return. After the game, he was seen wearing a walking boot and using a crutch.
