The San Antonio Spurs had one roster spot left before handing it to the 14-year vet from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Bismack Biyombo is returning to the Alamo City on a one-year deal, fortifying the front court with depth the Silver and Black haven't had in years. Brian Wright has now given Mitch Johnson everything he needs to make a strong playoff push, and fans should be stoked.

Biyombo is an insurance policy at this point in his career. He wasn't even on a roster last season before San Antonio picked him up in the back half of the season. Thankfully, he was available because the team's center depth was severely compromised after trading Zach Collins and Charles Bassey's nonstop injury woes, on top of Victor Wembanyama's DVT diagnosis.

Training camp should be intense this year. Most of the players on this roster will be fighting for minutes. They can all play. Coach Johnson will be tasked with determining which combinations work best, and, quite frankly, who will be left on the bench, wishing for more time to prove their worth.
Well, not Biyombo. Of course, he'll want to play, but his role is probably going to be the easiest to predict. Most nights, he's not going to play. The Spurs have 15 players on standard contracts, and only 12 can be active on any given night, so unless San Antonio has an open spot in the rotation due to injury, expect him to do a lot of cheering from the sidelines.
That's okay, though. He didn't get a job at all last year until SA reached a "break in case of emergency" point in their season. It's much better when you can start the year off on a roster. There are worse things in the world than getting paid to root for your teammates from the bench. Having him there brings another veteran presence to the locker room, too. It provides this team with a healthy mix of youth and experience.
We're only two short weeks away from media day, as it's set to take place on Monday, September 29. That kicks off the festivities, with preseason games soon to follow. Their first exhibition game will be against the Guangzhou Long-Lions on October 6.
