The San Antonio Spurs have signed Bismack Biyombo to a contract, per [Shams Charania of ESPN](https://x.com/ShamsCharania/status/1967612604706418928), filling out the final spot on their roster. However, with the current state of the team, San Antonio may have made a mistake. Biyombo is a fine player, but they should have prioritized adding three-point shooting instead of another center.
Victor Wembanyama needed support last year, and the Spurs responded by adding ample depth this summer. They signed Luke Kornet in free agency and traded for Kelly Olynyk, both of whom can play the five. Considering how few three-point shooters they have on the roster, especially at the wing position, bringing Biyombo on board was overkill at the center spot.
They should have brought in more three-point shooting instead.
**Why do the Spurs need more three-point shooting?**
----------------------------------------------------
Heading into the 2025 NBA Draft, after the Spurs won the second overall pick in the lottery, three-point shooting was a major question mark. Dylan Harper joined the squad, as projected, and now, the Spurs have a relatively shaky backcourt when it comes to long-range scoring.
De’Aaron Fox isn’t the best shooter, and neither are Harper or Rookie of the Year Stephon Castle. Devin Vassell is a decent shooter, and Keldon Johnson has had okay seasons from distance. But the only above-average three-point shooters left from last year’s roster are Harrison Barnes and Julian Champagnie.
Now, heading into next summer, while Olynyk will add to that mix, San Antonio could use some more shooting on the wing next to their guard room.
Biyombo will provide some solid depth behind Wembanyama and the rest of the centers on the roster.
**Who could the Spurs have signed instead of Bismack Biyombo?**
---------------------------------------------------------------
Unfortunately for the Spurs, there weren’t many elite three-point shooters left in free agency for them to target over Biyombo. But they should have taken the chance on some.
Malik Beasley could have been a high-end option, though he will likely have lots of suitors. San Antonio could have looked overseas, too.
Tyler Dorsey and Andreas Obst enjoyed very efficient EuroBasket showings, and both are solid three-point shooters. Even someone like Cedi Osman, who played for the Spurs not too long ago, could have been an intriguing option.
Taking a chance on a rookie fresh out of college or someone who played well in Summer League could have been a good idea, too. Any solid three-point shooter would have been a solid fit.
Regardless, rather than signing Biyombo, the Spurs should have sought out shooting for their final roster spot.
