Man United lost 3-0 to Manchester City in a derby day at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.
Goals from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland sealed United’s fate, leading many United fans to question Amorim’s approach, and seeing as it feels as though nothing has changed from last year, the manager is under considerable pressure.
Having overseen some impressive summer signings such as Benjamin Sesko, Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, Amorim would have expected more at the start of the season. It doesn’t get much easier, too, as their next game is against Chelsea, who are fifth after four games.
Wayne Rooney says Man United have “got worse” under Amorim
Following the derby day defeat to City, former United and England striker Wayne Rooney has said that despite all the optimism surrounding Amorim’s appointment, the Red Devils have got worse under him compared to Erik Ten Hag.
Rooney said on the Wayne Rooney show: “I want to be as supportive and positive as I can be on the manager and the players. But it is very difficult to sit here and say we are seeing progression, and at least we're seeing things that will get results in the near future.
“We're seeing none of that, and it is very difficult. There was an image towards the end of the game where I saw the Manchester United fans leaving. You could hear the fans singing Amorim's name, but I think that is so powerful that the United fans were leaving the game.
"You know the game is over and I think they were very disappointed in what they were seeing. It is hard to see how it continues.”
Much of the talk around Amorim is that he had a vision of a certain style of football, with his 3-4-3 formation following his success in Portugal for Sporting CP. However, since joining United, Amorim’s vision hasn’t worked out.
Rooney added: “I think after the last year when Ten Hag got sacked and Ruben came in, we're hearing how they're going to play and it is going to change. I think if the manager is honest with himself, it has got worse."
What has Amorim said about his Man United future?
The United boss spoke in his post-match press conference after the defeat to City on Sunday, and he made it very clear that he believes that he is the right man for the job, and that he is fully committed to the role.
“My message is that I am going to give everything," he told reporters. "I will do everything, always thinking about what is best for the club. That was always the same message. It is not my decision, the rest. Until I am here, I will do my best. I really want to win games. I am suffering more than them."
Amorim is certainly one of the Premier League managers under the most pressure with West Ham United boss Graham Potter in a similar boat.
